Ad Hoc Working Group on Production

The purpose of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Production (AHWGP) is to provide an interface between the Science Community, Project, and ECS to ensure that data products and operational scenarios for producing and acquiring them are adequately described. This includes understanding factors such as archival size, data processing power, network properties, and external interfaces necessary for acquiring non-EOS data.

The initial emphasis of the AHWGP has been on the building of reliable models of EOSDIS that take into account data production, archival sizing, and network loadings. The goal is to achieve a better understanding of the requirements necessary to support the first EOS instruments on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and AM-1 platforms.

Each of the EOS instrument teams has periodically provided information to the AHWGP about the data products their software will produce. This information helps the AHWGP better understand the data processing needs of the EOS instrument teams and thereby achieve a greater level of reliabiltiy in their modeling of EOSDIS.

The information collected by the AHWGP includes both process information and file information. Process information describes the science software that produces EOS standard data products. This information includes how often a process is run, under what conditions it can run, and the number of floating point instructions required for each run

File information describes the data used by the science software. This data may be standard data products or other data needed by the software. It includes temporal coverage, spatial coverage, and volume measured in bytes.
